Statement by Andrew Scheer on KeystoneXL

The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Member of Parliament for Regina-Qu’Appelle, today released the following statement addressing reports that President-elect Joe Biden will cancel the Keystone XL pipeline extension:

“The news about Keystone is devastating for energy-sector workers and proof that Trudeau’s energy policies are a failure. By cancelling Canadian pipelines Justin Trudeau has made Canada even more dependent on the United States.

“The pipelines Trudeau killed would have displaced foreign oil in Eastern Canada and opened up markets in the Pacific region for our own energy exports. By killing those projects, Trudeau’s policies mean that we are once again at the mercy of the U.S. administration with no alternatives.

“It is also now clear that Trudeau’s plan to impose a carbon tax, in order to please anti-oil and gas activists to win their support for these projects, is not working. As a result, we are paying a double penalty: Higher costs with the carbon tax and thousands of lost jobs in Saskatchewan due to cancelled projects.

“It is vital for Canada’s economic recovery that Justin Trudeau immediately meet with the President-elect to discuss this project of national significance that supports countless workers on both sides of the border.”
